Business awards encourage green initiatives
Story & photos by Aldwyn Altuney
THE first winner of a new Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards category promoting environmental responsibility has been awarded at the May 2008 winners presentation.
Mitchell Builders won the first Environmental Management award for creating the first self sustainable, council-approved industrial estate in Australia.
The Award was presented at the Gold Coast City Council Chambers on May 28 and announced at a high profile launch in Conrad Jupiters' Penthouse Suite on March 26.
Mitchell Builders developed and built The Environmental Industrial Estate in Stapylton to showcase the ability of using environmentally friendly and self-sustaining methods while still maintaining profitability and economic viability for the industry and community.
Mitchell Builders director/ CEO Bruce Mitchell said the 10-acre estate had maintained a section of habitat as a wildlife corridor, used recycled water to maintain its gardens and exteriors, solar energy for all body corporate public street lighting, water pumps, security systems and other needs, had six 45,000 litre rainwater tanks and its own self-sustaining sewage system.
"We developed the site primarily on environmental grounds to show not only that this can be done economically, but also with the capacity to do so without compromise and be self sustainable and in unison with the environment, while showing a healthy return on investment," Mr Mitchell said.
"In time, water will become a very expensive and finite commodity unless we actively and consciously conserve it and future developments of industrial estates will need to take on board the initiatives we have shown here for the future of industrial estates to continue.
"More than that, as water becomes scarcer and the cost of it accelerates, all of us need to understand that if we are to continue as a species, we all need to make a positive contribution to the health of this planet."
Committee president Ian Cousins said this year, the Awards committee were very excited to announce the new monthly category to reward and promote environmental responsibility.
The Environmental Management Award, sponsored by Gold Coast City Council's 2020 Vision on Waste Strategic Plan, is open to businesses across all sectors who have implemented good environmental practices, not just those in the environmental industry.
"The category recognises companies who are actively moving away from over-reliance on landfill and recognises potential re-use for their business waste, as well as reducing carbon emissions and water waste," Mr Cousins said.
"Gold Coast City has been one of the fastest growing regions in Australia for more than four decades.
"New and established businesses are thriving in the robust, economic environment of Australia's sixth largest city and fastest growing regional centre.
"With this growth comes the responsibility to our future generations and the need to focus our efforts towards creating a sustainable future for our environment."
Other May winners were Icecraft International (Family Business); P&M Plastics (Manufacturing and Construction); Elders Pest Control (Mayor's Innovation GC); Powertec Technologies (Retail, Wholesale and Distribution); Timezone Funtasia (Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation); Aerial Angels Productions (Trades, Professions and Services); gotalk (Information Technology and Multimedia) and Hall Finance & Insurance Solutions (Emerging Business).
Also at the May presentation, Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clark made an announcement that he, via the committee, was launching a new annual award called the Mayor's Corporate Social Responsibility Award, which will reward a local business who has supported a community/ non profit organisation throughout the year – either financially or in staff time/ mentoring partnerships.
It will be awarded at the GCBEA black tie gala at Conrad Jupiters on November 22, along with the major award winners in each category.
Winners of previous awards have been maximising their exposure through their titles.
At the launch, alongside many of the city's leading business people, was 2007 Business of the Year winner Kenton Campbell, founder of Zarraffa's Coffee.
Mr Campbell said winning the 2007 award had boosted moral among his staff and made him feel that his hard work had paid off.
"It means that the Gold Coast believes in us as a company. I'd encourage anyone to apply," he said.
Every month from May to October, the awards acknowledge winners in each of the nine categories. Entries close on the first day of each month for the following month's awards.
