New press hits spot for sanctuary

Fri Apr 4 2008

Surfers Inkspot Printers co-director Suzy Kinsel, who has run the business with her husband Jim since 1985, said it was important to constantly stay on top of new technology and give back to the community.

The new four-colour A3, 52 Speedmaster Heidelberg Press brings the company's printing press acquisition to five and means it can offer quicker turnaround on jobs.

"Now we have the machine power to handle extra workloads," Mrs Kinsel said.

"In the printing industry, it's all about timing and we want to be better able to meet our customer's deadlines. Now we have the machine power to do so. This makes it quicker for us to do business cards, letterheads, flyers and brochures, which is the bulk of our business."

The company will print promotional material for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the new press and offer these as giveaways at the launch.

All the paper, chemicals and inks used are environmentally friendly and recyclable.

The new press has a pre and post dampening program and wash-up devices to ensure less ink wastage and wash up solutions than older machines, thus reducing the environmental impact.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary staff will also do an animal display at the invitation-only event as part of Year of the Frog. The idea is to raise awareness for conservation and the animal hospital.

Surfers Inkspot Printers also regularly donates to other charities and non-profit organisations, including Bravehearts, Lifeline, New Life Care, Salvation Army, Highway Christian Church, the Gold Coast Community Fund and the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.

About 35 staff work at the Nerang business, which has won numerous awards including the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards Trades, Professions and Services category in September 2003, Queensland Printing Industry Craftsmanship Awards for Packaging in 1993 and the 12th National Print Awards in 1995.

Suzy and Jim moved to the Gold Coast from California in 1985 and fell in love with it.

"I think this is such a great place to live," she said.

"We've been blessed by having a successful business here and I think it's important to give back to the community to show appreciation. I'm proud of the Gold Coast and I think Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is such an awesome icon for the city. I think people should get behind that. A lot of people who work there are volunteers."

And the secret to their success?

"I think you have to provide really excellent service and quality at competitive pricing. We've been around a long time. People can trust us. Jim and I are Christians and we definitely believe in taking care of people. There's honesty and integrity and you need that just to stay in business."
